The new way to search

If you're a ChatGPT subscriber, you're likely familiar with the internet search feature introduced late last year. This new capability allows AI agents to not only generate responses based on their own knowledge but also supplement that information with real-time search engine results. At OMNIUX, we are constantly exploring ways to maintain our edge in the AI search engine arena.

The focus is shifting from "How do I get my website to the top of the search results?" to "How do I get my website included in ChatGPT's responses?". Below, we outline some key design strategies to help you stay competitive.

Imagine you want to book a trip to Paris. Today, this involves researching the destination, organizing flights, booking a hotel, and deciding on activities. Typically, you would use a combination of Google, flight comparison websites, and TripAdvisor to make these decisions, which requires a lot of manual effort.

Looking ahead, we can envision a future where an AI plans your entire trip for you, taking into account your provided dates, budget, and interests. As this future approaches, it's crucial to ensure that your business appears in these AI-generated results. The solution might be simpler than you think...

1. JSON-LD

If you haven't heard of JSON-LD, it's a method of encoding linked data using JSON (JavaScript Object Notation). It is a lightweight and easy-to-use format for structuring data to be machine-readable and to interlink data across different sources.

Adding JSON-LD to your website is as simple as adding a Script tag to your website's header. In the context of a framework such as NextJS, you can dynamically generate your JSON-LD at build time, or with ISG, setting the JSON with dangerouslySetInnerHTML. With JSON-LD, you can add lots of "glanceable" information to your web page, allowing for AIs to search for key pieces of information on the results page, rather than diving into the web page itself. For instance, if you have a store with product reviews, you can add review data and ratings to your JSON-LD, making key information visible for an AI agent.

An example of JSON-LD

There are a lot of benefits to using JSON-LD for your website;

SEO

    • Improves search engine understanding of the content, potentially leading to better visibility in search results.
  1. Interoperability

    • Enhances data interoperability across different platforms and services by using standardized vocabularies like schema.org.
  2. Ease of Implementation

    • Can be easily added to existing web pages without altering the visible content or structure of the page.
  3. Rich Snippets

    • Enables rich snippets in search results, such as star ratings, event details, and other enhanced features that improve user engagement.

With JSON-LD, you can add lots of "glanceable" information to your web page, allowing for AIs to search for key pieces of information on the results page, rather than diving into the web page itself.

    2. Accessibility

This one is a bit of a no-brainer. If you think about it, an AI Agent is not much different from a screen-reader. It accesses the HTML behind the page, rather than the visual representation of that data in order to determine what information is and is not important. Aria-tags have, for years, allowed developers to control the important of certain elements on a page. This, mixed with semantic HTML results in a webpage that is more easily crawlable by Google, AI agents, and most importantly, screen-readers.

As a point of principle, OMNIUX only develops websites that are highly accessible. Not just for accessibility reasons, but also for the hidden boost in SEO! By making sure that your website is easy to read, uses semantic HTML, uses well documented meta-tags, and makes proper use of image/video alt tags, you will soon notice an uptick in organic web traffic.

3. Text Content & Keywords

There is nothing more important than content. AI agents like GPT-4 use relevancy keywords in order to perform web searches. You want to make sure that your keyword usage is consistent across the entirety of your website in order to perform more effectively.

For instance, let's say you own a burger restaurant in Sedona, Arizona. If ChatGPT is being asked to search for burger restaurants in the area, you should have the location (Sedona, Arizona, USA) and the type of restaurant (Burger Restaurant) iterated multiple times throughout your website. It may be a good idea to invest in an SEO or marketing company (like OMNIUX!) in order to profile and boost your keyword's effectiveness.
